Thorn
While working with our Napa Valley growers, we came across small vineyard lots of Merlot that managed to escape being replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired to preserve these prestigious Merlot lots and introduce our distinct style of Napa Valley Merlot, Thorn was created.
The final wine is a Merlot, blended with Syrah and Malbec. Aromas of savory spice, black cherry, and mocha with cedar and blackberry. The entry delivers an elegant balance with flavors of black plum and anise, along with hints of grilled rosemary and toasted oak. Velvety, chocolate tannins develop into a robust finish.

Bright aromas and flavors of smooth cherry, plum and strawberry with hints of cedar, black olive and spice—supported by a supple texture with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. These qualities come from choice Central Coast Merlot grapes.
Coastal California is the kind of place Merlot grapes love to grow. Not too warm, not too cold, a little bit of rainfall. Makes our coastal Merlot just right.

Cuttings
The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend Cuttings is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine, but blended with some Petite Sirah and Syrah as well as a touch of Zinfandel. This is outstanding wine, and there are 5,000 cases of it. The Cabernet comes from top sites such as the Inkgrade Vineyard that Les Behrens made well-known. The wine offers plenty of blackberry and cassis fruit as well as some licorice, truffle, and lead pencil shavings. It is full-bodied, again very opulent (a hallmark of all of the wines from The Prisoner) and finishes authoritatively. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

A touch under-ripe but then a nice blackcurrant sweetness come through. Very succulent fruit. Nice length and clarity, very sophisticated.
There's 20 degrees difference between our northern and southern vineyards, though it's only 40 miles. So, whether grapes like it cool or warm, like our Cabernet Sauvignon, they all grow up delicious.
